WORKSHOP ON APPLICATION OF MALAYSIAN STANDARDS AND UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR PRODUCT DESIGN

Time: 8.30 am – 12.30pm

Venue: Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), IIUM, Gombak

In conjunction with UDPC 2011 Competition, a workshop is organized. The workshop will provide some insights on the application of universal design in designing products for disable person, elderly and children, as well as highlighting the Malaysia Standards (MS) with regards to designing universal design product and its development. The inviter speakers will be experts in the particular groups, and Standards Malaysia’s officer-in-charge in developing Universal Design Standards in Malaysia. The target audience for the workshop will be the students, designers, manufacturers and educators.


FEE

Registered participants of the Universal Design Product Competition (UDPC 2011) will be invited to the workshop and the admission is free.


ASSESSMENT

Assessment date by the judges: 16th – 17th November 2011

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The organizer has the right to appoint any jury to assess the participating entries and decisions made by the panel of jury are final. The assessment is based on:

  • Novelty of product (How novel is the idea or concept. Is the product unique?)
  • Inventiveness (Is the product innovative or modification of a similar existing product? Would it likely lead to a new product, system, design, material or process?)
  • Functionality (Fulfilling its intended functions, reliability and problem solving)
  • Educational impact (Contribution of the design / invention on the needs for the disable person, elderly and children development)
  • Ergonomic and safety requirement (The interaction between user, product and environment; physically and psychologically which follows the Standards Malaysia requirements)
  • Commercial potentialities (Market potential of the invention – Is there any evidence of market need? Is the product / invention comparable or superior to similar product in the market?)
  • Presentation and demonstration quality (The whole idea / design / invention are presentable which qualify its designers to be awarded as the winner such as quality of its prototype / model, writing, sketches, drawing and verbal presentation /explanation

RULES AND REGULATION

The organizer cannot be held liable and responsible for any damages, claims or lost of ideas before or after the competition. Design protection according to the Intellectual Property Rights Act: All participants are encouraged to register their designs under the Intellectual Property Rights Act and to keep all documents as proof of ownership before sending or exposing their design to the organizer.

The competition can be participated individually or group 2/3, which means members of the group to share the same prize.

INTRODUCTION

KAED Universal Design Unit (KUDU) IIUM and Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA) is organizing a half day Production Design Workshop on Universal Design Product Competition (UDPC 2011). In conjunction with this event, a competition on Universal Design Product Competition 2011 (UDPC 2011) for all is being held to expose the community about the products where the design, technology, material and standards of products designing in Malaysia are applicable for all people including disable, elderly and children.

The competition is supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), and in collaboration with Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM) and Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (MYM).

Products winning the Universal Design Product Competition will be awarded the ‘Malaysia Good Design Mark’ issued by the MRM. In addition, MRM will also assist in the commercialization of the relevant products in the market.

THE AIM

The aim of the competition is to provide an opportunity for designers, especially higher institution students to enhance their creativity, ideas and innovativeness in designing universal design product for all with the application of Malaysian Standards (MS) in mind. It is hoped that with the application of MS, appropriate technology, new ideas and inventions by the participants, the competition will be able to generate interesting, good, safe and educationally relevant product to be utilized for all kinds of people, especially for the disable person, elderly and children development. (MS 1184: 2002, MS 1331: 2003, MS 1183: 1994 and MS 2015: 2006 (Part 1))

The winners will be announced during the seminar on the International Conference on Universal Design in the Built Environment (ICUDBE2/2011), on the 22nd November 2011.
